When rules, regulations, or licensing requirements conveniently raise barriers to entry, it starts to look less like consumer protection and more like insulation from challengers.

So the argument isn’t that government always opposes competition, but that it has a built-in incentive to manage or restrict it—because real competition introduces accountability. And systems that aren’t used to competing rarely volunteer to start.
