A government that feeds you can also starve you. That is not a metaphor. It is a warning. When we place our survival entirely in the hands of an institution, we give that institution enormous power over us. The same system that decides who receives the food can decide who does not. The same authority that promises to protect our interests can become compromised by corruption, greed, incompetence, or simply the pursuit of its own interests. And this is where self-reliance matters.

Growing your own food. Learning how to repair what breaks. Knowing how to make, build, preserve, and provide for yourself. These things may seem small in a world where we can order almost anything with the click of a button, but independence has never been measured by convenience. It is measured by what happens when the convenience disappears.

We like to believe that history belongs to the past. That the mistakes made by previous generations were unique to their circumstances. That we are more educated, more sophisticated, and somehow less susceptible to the same failures. History does not seem particularly impressed by our confidence.

Again and again, we watch power concentrate. We watch institutions grow larger and less accountable. We watch promises of security become reasons for greater dependence. And when the system eventually fails the people who trusted it most, we act surprised. Then we rebuild. And, eventually, we forget. That may be the most dangerous part.

Because history does not have to repeat itself. We repeat it. We inherit the warnings, dismiss them as relics of another time, and then recreate the same conditions that produced them. Self-reliance is not about pretending you can live completely outside society. It is about making sure society cannot take everything from you simply because you depend upon it.

The government should never be your only source of food, security, knowledge, or hope. Because a government that feeds you can (and eventually will) starve you.
