Gulf of Tonkin Incident (1964) - In August 1964, U.S. officials reported that naval forces had been attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin. The destroyer USS Maddox was said to have been struck on August 2, with a second attack reported days later. The message was firm: American forces were under attack. The threat was real. Response was required. Backed by the Johnson administration and amplified across national media, the claims moved quickly. Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution with little opposition, granting sweeping authority to escalate U.S. involvement in Vietnam—without a formal declaration of war.

But the second attack—the one that cemented the case for escalation—was later called into serious question. Declassified documents, including findings from the National Security Agency, revealed that the August 4 incident likely never happened. Radar "misreadings," "faulty signals," and heightened tension were "mistaken" for an attack.

What followed was years of war built, in part, on a narrative that did not hold up under scrutiny. The Vietnam War would claim millions of lives before its end. The justification, once presented as undeniable, had unraveled. And it certainly wouldn’t be the last time. So we created this tongue-in-cheek t-shirt to remind people that we are rarely, if ever, told the whole truth.
