The Nayirah Testimony (1990) [referred to here as The FALSE Testimony] was a congressional testimony in which a Kuwaiti girl, “Nayirah,” claimed Iraqi soldiers removed babies from incubators and left them on the floor to die—later proven false. She was the daughter of Kuwait’s U.S. ambassador, and her appearance was arranged by Hill & Knowlton as part of a coordinated PR campaign. The story was widely repeated by U.S. officials and media, helping build public and congressional support for the Gulf War.
The incident demonstrated how emotionally charged, unverified claims can be leveraged to manufacture consent for military action, highlighting vulnerabilities in media scrutiny, government transparency, and the use of humanitarian narratives to justify war.
