Project ARTICHOKE (1951–1953) A CIA interrogation and behavior-control program that explicitly examined how to break a human being. Techniques included drug-induced states, hypnosis, prolonged isolation, psychological stress, and threats, frequently without the subject’s consent. Internal CIA memos asked whether a person could be forced to commit acts against their will, including false confessions and treason. ARTICHOKE targeted U.S. citizens and foreign nationals and operated outside U.S. law, with no medical ethics, judicial oversight, or informed consent.
