Agent Orange was a chemical herbicide deployed by the United States during the Vietnam War to defoliate jungles and destroy crops. Manufactured primarily by Dow Chemical Company and Monsanto (yes, THAT Monsanto!), it was contaminated with dioxin—one of the most toxic compounds known to man. Internal documents and later investigations suggested that both government agencies and manufacturers were aware, or at minimum had strong indications, that exposure posed serious health risks. Despite this, millions of gallons were sprayed, exposing not only Vietnamese civilians but also American troops operating in those areas.
For many veterans, the war did not end when they came home. Years later, they began developing cancers, organ damage, neurological disorders, and birth defects in their children—conditions that were slow to be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Early on, many were denied care or compensation, forced to prove a connection between their service and their illnesses while their health deteriorated. Families were left to carry the burden—financially, physically, and emotionally—often with little institutional support. It took decades of advocacy and mounting evidence before meaningful recognition and benefits were extended, leaving a lasting perception among many that those who served were, for years, effectively left out in the cold.
