CIA Involvement in Modern Art

During the Cold War, the CIA injected itself into cultural programs aimed at promoting American artistic freedom as a contrast to Soviet state-controlled socialist realism. One of the key vehicles for this effort was the Congress for Cultural Freedom, which helped fund exhibitions, magazines, and international art promotion—often without public attribution to the agency. Because who needs transparency when "freedom" is at stake?!

Within this broader strategy, abstract expressionism was frequently highlighted as "evidence" of U.S. "creative freedom." Entities such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), supported in part by private foundations with overlapping elite networks, played a major role in promoting artists like Jackson Pollock, known for his famous "paint drip" technique. This, of course, is simply a recreation of an actual Pollock piece. But chances are, few people would be able to tell the difference, as both resemble something a child would make.
